I was a crazy ball of tangled emotions about this, but mostly excited for him. And me. Since he'll be gone all day learning, socializing, and loving the heck out of those two recesses, I get to write all day five days a week--while the sun is up! No more nodding off over the keyboard. This is exciting. VERY exciting. More on that later. For now, I want to share some of my favorite books I read over the summer.

ONE FOR THE MURPHYS by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

Carley uses humor and street smarts to keep her emotional walls high and thick. But the day she becomes a foster child, and moves in with the Murphys, she's blindsided. This loving, bustling family shows Carley the stable family life she never thought existed, and she feels like an alien in their cookie-cutter-perfect household. Despite her resistance, the Murphys eventually show her what it feels like to belong--until her mother wants her back and Carley has to decide where and how to live. She's not really a Murphy, but the gifts they've given her have opened up a new future.

ONE FOR THE MURPHYS was my first official read of the summer. I read it from cover to cover during the bus ride to NYC for BEA (Book Expo of America). What an emotional ride! (The story not the bus ride) I'd heard rave reviews from writer friends but had no idea I'd end up weeping. I wanted to hug Carley the entire time. This is one of those stories that feels too real to be fiction. The characters, the setting, the heartbreaking plot. And that ending...

THE MARK OF ATHENA by Rick Riordan

In The Son of Neptune, Percy, Hazel, and Frank met in Camp Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of Camp Halfblood, and traveled to the land beyond the gods to complete a dangerous quest. The third book in the Heroes of Olympus series will unite them with Jason, Piper, and Leo. But they number only six--who will complete the Prophecy of Seven?

The Greek and Roman demigods will have to cooperate in order to defeat the giants released by the Earth Mother, Gaea. Then they will have to sail together to the ancient land to find the Doors of Death. What exactly are the Doors of Death? Much of the prophecy remains a mystery. . . .

I adore this series. Each book in the Heroes of Olympus is a HUGE (even the length) adventure and THE MARK OF ATHENA is every bit as huge as the rest. I loved seeing Percy's and Jason's groups finally unite to continue the quest. Young romance, crazy life-or-death situations, Greek mythology, giants, a flying ship, Percy Jackson--and that's only the short list of what makes this fourth installment so awesome. Can't wait for HOUSE OF HADES in October. Side note: saw The Sea of Monsters film this summer and loved it!

A GAME OF THRONES by George R.R. Martin

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.

Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

This was one of the few adult books I've read in the last five years. I know I'm way behind the game here. I've watched people gush about the Game of Thrones TV series for a couple years now but I didn't want to jump in halfway or deal with another distraction from writing. Then I took the leap this summer and started the show and...WHAT WAS I WAITING FOR? The show was so brilliant I *had* to read the books so I could spend more time in a world that contained Jon Snow and dragons. Since the books are so long (and season 4 doesn't premiere until March 2014!) and I have so many YA and MG books waiting to be read, I'm taking a little break but looking forward to diving into book 2 this fall. Also looking forward to watching the show with my son when he's older. Much older. 30 sounds good. If you haven't seen it, the show is VERY adult and not for the faint of heart. I'm still mourning the loss of a certain character in season 1.
Just before the start of Summer Half, in April 1883, a very minor event took place at Eton College, that venerable and illustrious English public school for boys. A sixteen-year-old pupil named Archer Fairfax returned from a three-month absence, caused by a fractured femur, to resume his education.

Almost every word in the preceding sentence is false. Archer Fairfax had not suffered a broken limb. He had never before set foot in Eton. His name was not Archer Fairfax. And he was not, in fact, even a he.

This is the story of a girl who fooled a thousand boys, a boy who fooled an entire country, a partnership that would change the fate of realms, and a power to challenge the greatest tyrant the world had ever known.

Expect magic.

I love that last line. Expect magic. Uh, yes. You will find so much magic in the pages of THE BURNING SKY. And a slow smoldering romance, and adventure, and a beautiful fantasy world you won't want to leave. The push and pull and battle of wills between the main character and love interest (who is every bit a leading character himself) is perfection. So thrilled this is a series. A special thanks to Melanie for sharing her ARC full of fun notes. I added my own notes and sent this awesome book off to the next lucky reader in the group. The ARC cover has a different design but I'm loving the one shown here for the hardcover which releases next month. A dragon made of flames and a castle. Doesn't get much better than that.
The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

These are not your typical aliens. *shudders* Or your typical anything. The pacing. I can't even. Lightning fast and not a word to spare, THE 5th WAVE consumed me from page one. I had no idea where the story was headed or how the heck it would end. And I LOVED every minute of it. My writer nose couldn't sniff out the plot twists to save my life. Confession: I almost never read book summaries these days. I prefer to go in blind. So if you haven't read THE 5th WAVE yet try to erase the summary you've just read. Whoops.
Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

Dragons. I could just leave it at that. Seriously, the dragons in SERAPHINA are incredible. I went into this book not knowing what to expect. Dragons that take human shape! Yes, please. What a brilliant way to get inside a dragon's mind and help us relate on a whole different level. But my favorite moments were those when the dragons were in their true form. I can't help it. There's just something about giant, terrifying, beautiful beasts with such sharp intelligence. If you're not obsessed with giant winged beasts like I am, you're still sure to love SERAPHINA for the beautiful writing and descriptions, mystery, fascinating characters, and sparks of romance. There's a pretty big gap between books, so I'm glad I waited to read this first installment. On February 25th you'll find me waiting in the freezing cold for the local bookstore to open so I can get my hands on book 2. Rebecca L Suttonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09239634586708606373noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1209535647948718521.post-41780476922120117512013-07-10T13:02:00.000-04:002013-07-10T13:02:09.385-04:00Kidliterati Goes Live! It's been almost a year since I joined a group of fellow middle grade writers. And I love them. Seriously. They rock. One quick email with a call for help and within minutes I have a dozen responses. Doesn't matter if it's a HELP! I need someone to read my pages or HELP! I don't know what this agent's email means or HELP! I'm having a rough writing day and just need to vent, they are always there. I am so ridiculously blessed to have landed in this group. *A big shout out to Ella Schwartz for reaching out on Twitter with the invite and Karen Hallam for organizing MGBetareader and welcoming me in*

Today is a very special day for this amazing this bunch. Today we launch, Kidliterati, a group blog that gets to the heart of MG and YA books. You guys, it is awesome. Just look at the banner!
And we owe so much of what you see to Melanie Conklin. She's a rock star. Melanie has worked her tail off, getting the blog designed and set up, organizing the first wave of posts, and just keeping us all in line. Also, she made reference to The NeverEnding Story in her notes on my pages yesterday. I can't even...
In fact, the whole team is made of rock stars. Just check out the Meet the Writers page. We come from different places, write different types of stories, and have different backgrounds but share one passion: KIDLIT. We write it, read it, and live it. This blog is the perfect way to share that with world. You'll see reviews on YA and MG books, thoughts from readers (including kids!) with the Kidliterati Ten, and tips and thoughts about writing with the Secrets of Kidlit posts.

Do you see why I'm so psyched?

Go take a look around (come back often!) and enter the big ol' celebratory launch contest. There's something for everyone--ARCs, books, critiques. Since I shared the news on Twitter and Facebook last month it isn't exactly breaking news that I signed with Rosemary Stimola of Stimola Literary Studio, but because I like reading about how other writers got their agents, I thought I'd share my story.

A little background information...

I started writing in September of 2008.

I wrote 5 books before starting the one that got me an agent.

This is my second middle grade project, all the others were YA.

I received well over 200 rejections when I queried 3 of those 5 books after sending out an even higher number of queries.

I only sent a total of 6 queries for this project.

I did a revise and resubmit with Rosemary before she offered representation.

I'm living proof of the saying One yes is all it takes. And I'm not sure that YES would've come if I hadn't finally pushed my fears aside and written the story that had been nagging at me for months. I love fantasy, always have. My first few projects had elements of fantasy but were more on the realistic side, so when this idea of a shooting star and a dragon kept nudging its way in past the others, I shrugged it off. Too ambitious. Too scary. Too risky for me as a writer. The more I ignored it the more the idea grew. I saw actual shooting stars, images of dragons on Pinterest, dreamt about a girl catching stars. So, though I was deep into an R&R (invitation to revise and resubmit) on a different book for a different agent, I decided to start this new story.

A few months later THE STAR CATCHER AND THE DRAGON THIEF was complete. This idea that had terrified me, the one I thought I had no business writing or could write, poured out of me easier than any of the others, and is my most favorite story I've written or thought of. And lucky for me my dream agent happened to agree. (even after seeing my head shot on the client page I'm still pinching myself to prove this is real)

I have much to learn about writing and publishing, about myself and about life, but what I have learned from querying is: If you bust your butt and write and write and write and revise and revise and you surround yourself with talented and driven people who believe in your ability and dreams and who will be brutally honest about your work, then you'll get there. Ask them for help. Return the favor. Research agents. Make Query Tracker and Literary Rambles your best friends. And Don't. Give. Up.

I am thrilled and honored to take this journey with Rosemary and while it took a bazillion hours of writing, revising, more revising, waiting, and revising again before I queried her, I never would've made it to this point without the support and love of my amazing family and friends. They believed in me every step of the way and I can't thank them enough for all the babysitting, pep talks, reading/critiques, and encouragement. I love you all!

I'll wrap things up with a few photos of some of those people and the surprise breakfast celebration my sister put together for me the morning after I got the big news. I'm blessed beyond words! (as you will see, I am currently obsessed with adding text and art to photos with the Beautiful Mess and Over apps. And I'm not sorry.)
Since I'm such a visual person I love to make inspiration boards for my stories.

This is one I made for my recently completed MG fantasy,

Yep. That was my head exploding from the awesome that is October. So many amazing book releases! And exciting news.

A very BIG congratulations are in order for Becca Fitzpatrick and her major announcement yesterday on BLACK ICE, her first book after the completion of the Hush, Hush Saga. You can read all the juicy details here. Much more on that later.

Since there are so many great new releases this month I'm only going to focus on a few coming out now and save the later releases (FINALE, ICED, BEAUTIFUL REDEMPTION!) for a second post. Now for the new release love...

October1
STEALING PARKER by Miranda Kenneally

I love this book. Being the awesome person that she is Miranda brought me advance copies of Parker and DEAR TEEN ME (another incredible October release. More gushing to come when I post on the last half of Oct releases.) to Becca's signing when we met up during a visit in DC. Such a great surprise! I'm a huge fan of Miranda's sharp tight writing and killer dialogue, and super realistic honest characters. She handles heavy topics with ease and nails the romance. Any author that can get me--an avid non-sports fan--to fall madly in love with stories that contain a sports theme is a genius. So excited for THINGS I CAN'T FORGET, coming in March 2013!

Equally exciting is Miranda's big announcement from last week...

Author of CATCHING JORDAN, Miranda Kenneally’s RACING SAVANNAH, about an underprivileged girl training to be a jockey while working in the barn at a high-stakes horse farm whose on-again, off-again relationship with the owner’s son has an upstairs/downstairs effect on race day, pitched as Downton Abbey in the South, to Leah Hultenschmidt at Sourcebooks Fire, in a good deal, in a three-book deal, for publication in 2013, by Sara Megibow at Nelson Literary Agency (world).

So much awesome to look forward to from Miranda. We all need to send her plenty of diet coke and Mexican food to fuel all the writing she will be doing. Congrats, Miranda! You're a rockstar.

October 2
THE MARK OF ATHENA by Rick Riordan

I'm way behind on my reading these days (lots of productive writing and critiquing happening so it's a good thing) so I'm actually at this very moment reading the book that comes before Athena, THE SON OF NEPTUNE. But I can't wait to get to this one. I adore all of Rick Riordan's books and know Athena will be another action-packed adventure full of mythical wars and characters you can't help but love.

I also love how long the length of each book in this series and the Kane Chronicles are. The more time I get to spend in the amazing worlds he creates the better!

October 2
KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES by Shannon Messenger

My niece (and book buddy) read the advance copy of Keeper over the summer and gave it rave reviews, so I'm really looking forward to reading this book. I don't even know where to begin...the great reviews I've been hearing for months, how awesome Shannon is with her pay it forward attitude and involvement in the writing community, her excitement over the book, the gorgeous cover, the description...so many reasons I can't wait to read KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES.

Her second book, LET THE SKY FALL (this one is Young Adult) sounds equally amazing. And the cover featuring Becca's blurb? *Swoon*

October 2

THE SPINDLERS by Lauren Oliver

Let me start by saying I love anything Lauren Oliver writes. Her stories are works of art and, whether she's writing about a girl navigating a secret underground world full of giant mice and insects or an epic romance to rival Romeo and Juliet, her writing style is magical. And like all of her stories, THE SPINDLERS has a timeless quality, a book you can see kids reading 100 years from now. (Shout out to my writing buddy Nisha for sharing her advance copy with me!) When Liza’s younger brother Patrick’s soul is stolen by the evil Spindlers, spider-like creatures who live underground, she knows she must set out on a heroic quest to the world below to rescue it. And that she does. Everyone will love this Alice In Wonderland meetsThe Underland Chronicles story. I can't wait until my son is a little older so I can read Spindlers to him.

As a huge fan of the books I was super nervous to see the trailer for the first time last night. But holy WOW. The music (Florence is always a perfect choice), using the Beautiful Creatures title font from the book, the setting--so fantastic! Now if I could just get past the fact that this Ethan (am I the only one who thinks he looks way older than a high schooler?) still doesn't fit with the Ethan in my head...
And the biggest piece of advice I can give you is this: take a sheet of paper and write down five things that would make you really, really happy in your career. Then write down five things that would be “best case scenario” things. And lastly write five “in your wildest dreams” things.

Keep that list. Remember that list. Because in this business the finish line is constantly moving. One day you really just want an agent. Then it’s a book deal. Then it’s a bestseller. Then it’s a movie. Then it’s a castle next to JK Rowling’s.

In short, appreciate things as they’re happening, remember that once upon a time that thing was a dream of yours and that it’s still a dream for someone. So be grateful every day.

Seriously, how great is that advice? Especially coming from someone who has seen such success and has an understanding of how things work in the publishing industry. I'm super late with my BEA (Book Expo of America) post but I wanted to share a quick overview of what I brought home, some of what I wished I had brought home, and our FallenArchangel excitement.

Taking a break from the Florida fun to read Prodigy.
It is BRILLIANT.

My recent vacation ( I just got home this afternoon) made it possible for me to devour two of my BEA books in the last week, so trust me when I say ORIGIN by Jessica Khoury and PRODIGY by Marie Lu are two books you must read this coming fall/winter. Two amazing stories full of gorgeous writing, fascinating characters, and killer plot twists. THE RAVEN BOYS by Maggie Stiefvater is up next.

Because I took too many last year I practiced some big time restraint this year and only brought home six ARCs/galleys, but I'm thrilled with what I got. What do I wish I had brought home? ALTERED by Jennifer Rush, THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Maas and VENOM by Fiona Paul, just to name a few.

Then there was the BIG excitement of being there for the live reveal of Becca's FINALE and hanging with Becca herself again. (We'll always have the crazy taxi ride and Red Lobster, girls!)
SO much planned. SO much awesome.

June 1
Husband comes home from a year-long deployment in Kuwait. This one speaks for itself!

June 2
We're (FallenArchangel) doing a fan event in Washington DC with Becca Fizpatrick! Hanging with Becca and her fans IN PERSON. Email, Skype, Twitter etc. are great and all but nothing beats spending time with awesome people in real life. This will also be my 4 yr old's first time seeing DC so even though I used to live there, we're going to do it up old school tourist style with a night tour of the monuments and visit as many Smithsonian museums as we can fit in. Though I think he's most excited to meet Becca's sons after hearing they're Star Wars fans too. (No worries. He's been briefed on the dangers of wielding a light saber anywhere near the White House) If you're near the DC area please come and join us!
June 6
BEA! Ok, last year was a little rough when it came to getting from point A to B to C and back again and we had no idea what to expect. Insane. But this year we've got it covered. For starters, my sister and I are taking a bus into the city and only staying for the day. Then there's the freaking fantastic part about being there the day of Becca's FINALE cover reveal and signing, and more time with Becca! Veronica Roth, Stephanie Perkins, Kristin Cashore (and many other incredible authors) are signing that day too. Like I said, SO much awesome.
June ?-?
Still working on exact dates but we're heading to Florida again for 7-8 days to spend time with the husband's family, hit Disney World, Clearwater Beach, and whatever else we decide to do. And I get to actually sleep past 6am and have long stretches of writing time. For the record, I'd totally rather skip the parks (yes, even Harry Potter) and spend that time at the beach. Battling hordes of sweaty tourists and standing line is so not my thing. Sitting in the shade of a big umbrella, digging my toes into sand as soft as baby powder, listening to the waves, reading a book, and watching husband and son build sandcastles--yes, please.
One of my best friends, a friend I've known forever (even our moms were friends when they were pregnant with us) is due with her first child (a boy!) at the end of June. All of my childhood memories involve her and her family and she stayed the night at the hospital when my son was born. Also, her and her husband might be the nicest most generous people on the planet and will the best parents. Ever. I MUST be there when little man arrives.

I can't wait for the fun to begin. Bring on summer!

But I'm still hoping May holds some awesome surprises too...
Rebecca L Suttonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09239634586708606373noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1209535647948718521.post-13101123987184467712012-04-21T10:41:00.002-04:002012-04-21T10:41:51.926-04:00

My super talented and amazing sister is working on an all new design for my website and I cannot wait to share it! So if you happen to visit http://www.rebeccalsutton.com/ please know that the information on my projects is very outdated and will be shiny and new (and current) soon. And I hope to have some other exciting things to share soon too!

The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, I didn't need a coat this morning! But since I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and it's only mid-March, this spring weather can change in a heartbeat. Two days from now I could be shoveling snow. Still, I can't help that I have spring fever. It's just soooo nice outside and I can't wait to see all the leaf buds pop out and the nasty brown grass turn green.

Spring is all about renewal. There's the obvious renewal in nature, spring cleaning, swapping out the winter wardrobe for spring/summer clothes, but it also makes me want to start fresh in my writing. Lucky for me I'm at a point where I can start something new and I have two projects planned out to choose from. Both are MG (middle grade is usually ages 10 and up) and way out of my comfort range, a result of all the incredible inspiration I've gotten on Pinterest lately. I'll probably focus on the high fantasy since it terrifies and excites me so much. Dragons, magic, a deadly journey through a beautiful yet cursed land. Did I mention this is way out of my writing comfort range?

Here's the image that started it all...

If I'm deep in a first draft I don't read much, soooo since I'm not in deep first draft mode I've had the great pleasure of reading my little heart out this month. They're three very different books but share one common trait.

They rocked my world.

First up, PANDEMONIUM by Lauren Oliver. I was thrilled to discover this book was every bit as amazing as DELIRIUM. Lauren Oliver continually blows me away with her ability to combine beautiful and magical writing with heart-stopping action.

Where do I even begin? Maybe with the fact that I read this nearly 400 page book in less than 24 hours? While my 4-year-old was home from school? (Yeah, I have no idea how I managed that either)

I was exactly like an "uncured" in the book, crazed and infected with desire. Nothing could stop me from reading! PANDEMONIUM is the kind of story I pray every book I open will be. If you haven't read DELIRIUM then you must must must do it now so you can read this amazing follow up when it releases next month!

Stephen King's ON WRITING is for my fellow writers. I know I'm waaay behind on this one but in case you haven't read it--DO IT. Amazing. Raw and realistic advice and insight. I confess to never reading a single one of Mr. King's books (crazy, right?) so if it weren't for an awesome writing buddy of mine (yay Nisha!) reading excerpts to me at one of our tea/writing/chatting meetups I never would've picked this book up. And I am so very glad I did. I have the dried up highlighter and dozens of yellow flags sticking out of the pages to prove it.

Even though I absolutely loved reading about King's life and method of writing I can't say I'll plan on reading any of his novels (I just don't do horror). Still, I highly reccomend this book to anyone who writes or who is thinking about writing.

I can already tell this is one of those books I'll keep off the bookshelf so I can refresh my writer's brain as needed.

I've been slacking on my Twitter time lately but I was lucky enough to pop on one night and catch a tweet about ANGELFALL by Susan Ee. It caught my attention because this person said they were surprised at how many five star reviews this self-published book was getting and wanted to read it. I did a little googling. Gorgeous cover and 99 cents sale price?

Sold.

I wasn't looking to start a new book. I thought I'd snag it at the sale price and get to it when I had time. Then I read the first page. And the second...and the the third. I couldn't stop.

ANGELFALL takes everything you thought you knew about angels and rips it to shreds. With my massive TBR pile I don't have time to reread books but this is one book I have to reread. It's that good.
Rebecca L Suttonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09239634586708606373noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1209535647948718521.post-50589752830284657952012-01-11T09:01:00.002-05:002012-01-11T09:01:55.395-05:00I cannot wait for this...

Boy, do I have a lot of catching up to do here on the blog. But that will have to wait.
