One girl's opinion on the first Percy Jackson film

Well, hello there, Logan Lerman. You may have just turned 18, but you are totally a hottie as Percy Jackson.

OK, now that I got that out of my system...

As you can guess we went to see Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The adults in our group had a mixed reaction; one of my sisters was disappointed, the other was in between, I loved it, and my 10-year-old niece and 8-year-old nephew really liked it.

It got me thinking about books turned movie and I realized how many movies have turned me into a fan of the story. We're talking the big guys here; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Twilight. As strange as I think it is, I've read quite a few of my all time favorite series because of the news they were being made into feature films. I sort of feel a sell out for doing it backwards, but now that I'm a full time YA reader and writer I doubt that will happen again. I'm dying to see some of my favorite books on the big screen in the next couple years---Shiver, The Hunger Games, Uglies...

How I let Percy Jackson slip by until now is a mystery to me. I've had the paperback for months but have never read it, and as I mentioned in my last post I ordered the Percy Jackson box set. Something I'm even more excited about after seeing the movie. Of course, as usual, many of the book fans seem to be disappointed in the movie translation so I think my having seen the movie first will be a good thing.

It may only be my personal opinion, but I highly suggest checking this movie out. There were a few things that could've been cut out or came off a bit cheesy but overall I loved it. I had fun. I loved being surprised with not knowing the plot and I absolutely enjoyed watching Percy's character come to life. The fact that he was played by an actor he's cute as all heck didn't hurt either. ; )

What do you guys think? Any thoughts on Percy Jackson or any books turned into movies?

I was surprised to see your tweet that you loved it so much, but now that I know you haven't read the book yet it makes sense :)

I thought the movie was fun and a good movie by itself, but as an adaptation of one of my favorite books it was a big fail. They changed a lot of the plot, including things that make me curious to see how they're going to handle the next film if they continue the series.

I'd love to see what you think of the book, and of the movie after you've read the book!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Heather. I completely see where you're coming from here. I felt the exact same way about other adaptations and for once I'm glad I didn't get to read the book before seeing the movie. I've often wished that about others! I will definitely share my thoughts after reading the book.

Sorry you were disappointed, it's such a bummer when you love a story. Maybe they'll do a better job with the others. Hmmm, maybe I should hold off on reading the others then. Right. As if I'll be able to stop once I start reading!

I loved it too! I've read all the books and love them. I knew that it wasn't going to be the same as the books because I'm one of those people that look for trailers a lot and read all the stuff on imdb so I knew that they had change a lot of stuff. I went in there with an open mind and ended up loving it. I know my sister and her daughters won't like it because they don't know that they changed a bunch of stuff. She won't let me tell her anything so that's her fault. I agree with you about Logan too he is super cute! =D

Alas, I'm in a similar boat as you. The paperback of The Lightning Thief has been in my TBR for..let's just say a while, and I have yet to read it. Plan on seeing the movie this week (GASP! BEFORE reading the book...I know, I know...but don't worry, I STILL will), and from the reviews I've heard (aka people stopping in the bookstore to purchase the set) it's suppose to be pretty good. Will reserve own judgment until then....
Thanks for sharing! =0)

Yup, the movie was pretty decent, but as a book adaption, it changed a great deal of the plot and even some of the characters. It was kind of sad for me, seeing as the books will always have a treasured place on my shelf and it seems like it's impossible for this movie franchise to live up to it.

Ah, well. Apparently a lot of people enjoyed the movie, so that's good that I'm in the minority.

I haven't read the books, nor do I intend to (for whatever reason, I just can't get into them). But I am interested in seeing the movie. My hubby read the entire series, so odds are, I'll like the movie more than him, and he'll get to gripe about all the inconsistencies and changes. :)

I keep hearing about this--ok so now it's on my radar (he is a cutie btw).

Thanks for all the comments. It's so fun hearing what others think about the book to movie debate. One thing's for sure...the books will ALWAYS be better then the movies. ; )

I want to read the book before I see the movie. It' in my TBR pile in my Kindle, just haven't got to it yet. YET.

Haven't seen it yet, but my daughter has read the book a million times, and went to see the movie and came back raving about it. She said they changed everything, which normally she hates, but that the movie was so good on its own, she didn't care. She said it was "epic". Pretty sure that was the word. :)
